New Short Story: Lonely Ones

When Nimrod Interstellar Mining decides to shut down operations, thousands of robots that found their purpose digging and processing ore become suddenly aimless.

Even worse, Andy the admin robot and his crew are stuck on an ore ship orbiting the planet, while Andy’s friend Madeline who handles the com link on the planet surface is surrounded by robots who are going increasingly crazy.

As the years go by, the prospect of Andy and his crew getting rescued becomes more and more remote as the robots down below go haywire, destroying everything in their path.

Through it all, Andy and Madeline remain connected by com link, holding on to a shared hope. As the situation worsens, the years between their talks grow longer until they fail altogether. While Madeline works desperately to rebuild communications equipment, Andy drifts into a deep dream state, unsure if he will ever awake again.
